Bekal
Located 16 km south of Kasargod town, north Kerala, Bekal is known
for the Bekal Fort which has a Giant key hole shaped fort, golden expanse of beautiful
beach surrounding it, backwaters, hill destinations and water sport facilities
nearby. Bekal Fort shaped like a giant keyhole, this magnificent historical fort
offers a superb view of the Arabian sea from its tall observation towers, where
a few centuries ago huge cannons were strategically placed.
Nearby is an
old mosque said to have been built by the valiant Tipu Sultan of Mysore. Built
by the rulers of the ancient Kadampa dynasty, the fort changed hands over the
years to the Kolathiri Rajas, the Vijayanagar Empire, Tipu Sultan and finally
came under the British East India Company.
Today, the Bekal fort and its
surroundings is fast becoming an international tourist destination and a favourite
shooting locale for film makers. Bekal is also one among the five centres selected
by the Government of India to be developed into a 'Special Tourism Area'.
Bekal
Hole Aqua Park (1 km from Bekal Fort): The only one of its kind in northern Kerala,
this unique Aqua Park provides water sport facilities like pedalboats and water
cycles.
Pallikere Beach (1 km from Bekal Fort): This shallow beach offers
a spectacular view of the fort and has ample facilities for recreation and relaxation.
